Dental Implants

are an excellent way to replace missing teeth. They can provide a fixed solution rather than wearing removable appliances or dentures.  Implants can provide solid support and stability for crowns, bridges or dental appliances.

Dental implants are cylindrical in shape and are usually made of of titanium. Dental implants are surgically placed into the upper or lower jaw bone. This is usually done by a periodontist, a gum specialist, or by an oral surgeon.

Dental implants are strong and very stable and will usually last for many years. Occasionally, they need to be adjusted or even replaced due to wear. They can be used under a denture to give rigid support to the denture and help stabilize it from moving around. They can also serve as the understructure for crowns and bridges.

Dental Implants can be used to:

  • replace missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth.
  • correct bite problems caused by teeth that have moved into missing spaces.
  • restore a patient’s smile.
  • restore functions such as chewing and speech.
  • support facial tissues.
  • support crowns, bridges and dentures.

The Dental Implant process

The process of getting implants completed requires time and planning and sometimes involves several doctors depending on the complexity of the case.

A detailed history and examination, in addition to x-rays and a consultation to discuss your needs and expectations, are required to gather the information necessary to plan your case. The jaw and teeth are evaluated as to the amount and quality of bone and gum tissue and the amount of space available for an implant.

The dental  implant is placed into the bone by the surgeon.  It is allowed time to heal and the process of integration with the bone can take up to six months.  Depending on the type of implant, a second minor procedure may be required in order to uncover the implant and to  place a "healing cap" and then the process of restoring the crown, bridge or denture can then begin.

After a short time, perhaps up to a month, Dr. Neary can then see you to restore the implant with a crown, bridge or a denture, depending on your particular situation. This may take up to a couple of months to complete.  Dr. Neary will  give you instructions about maintenance and care when your treatment is completed. Like any other dental restoration, good oral hygiene, along with good eating habits and regular visits to our office to evaluate your teeth, will extend the life of your new implant.

If you are interested in dental implants, Scottsdale dentist Michael J. Neary, DDS can restore them for you with esthetic crowns, bridges or dentures !
