Crowns View Photos

Crowns (also referred to as caps) cover the entire surface of a tooth, restoring it very closely to its original shape and size. Crowns protect and strengthen tooth structure. Crowns are used when the restoration needed is too big to be restored with a filling.

Porcelain (tooth colored crown) are the most popular type of crown. They are very esthetic and have the durability to last many years. Porcelain crowns can be made to match the shape, size, and color of your existing teeth or can be used to change your smile and restore your teeth to a new natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.

 Crowns can:

  • restore broken or fractured teeth.
  • create cosmetic makeovers.
  • restore fractured or decayed teeth.
  • restore teeth with large or fractured fillings.
  • protect teeth that have had a root canal treatment.

Single Crown procedure

Dr. Neary takes two appointments to restore a tooth with a crown. At your first appointment, preliminary records and impressions may be taken. After the tooth is anesthetized with a local anesthetic, Dr. Neary will prepare the tooth and create enough space for the new crown. A crown build up may be required to build a substructure for the tooth that will insulate the tooth from thermal insults and strengthen your tooth. An impression is taken of your teeth and a temporary crown is placed with temporary cement. This temporary is usually worn 2-3 weeks.

At your second appointment, we remove your temporary crown and the tooth will be carefully cleaned and isolated. Your new crown will be placed in and adjusted to make sure that you are pleased with the esthetics and that your bite is comfortable. We then cement your new crown into place  with a high tech dental cement.

Dr. Neary and our staff will then give you care instructions and encourage you to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.
