Dentures and Partial Dentures

Dentures are removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth and supporting tissue. They closely resemble the natural dentition and can even enhance your smile.

There are two kinds of denture. Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth still remain. Partial dentures can fill in the spaces created by missing teeth and they can  prevent other teeth from moving and shifting.

Immediate dentures are complete dentures made in advance which allow the patient to have teeth  during the healing process. While the tissues heal, the denture may need minor adjustments and temporary relines until a final reline with hard acrylic is completed several months after the removal of the teeth.

Conventional dentures are typically replacement dentures for worn, older dentures. After initial placement, they may need to be relined every few years as the gum tissue and supporting structures may continue to shrink over time.

Dentures are made from very strong, durable acrylics and can last many years with proper care.

Dentures can be used to:

  • replace all teeth in an arch.
  • replace several or many teeth in an arch.
  • enhance smile and facial tissues.
  • improve functions such as chewing and speech.

The denture process

Making new custom dentures requires several appointments, usually over a period of several weeks. At the initial appointment, highly detailed impressions and measurements are taken and used to create your denture. Several follow  visits may be required to ensure proper shape, color, and fit. At the final delivery appointment, Dr. Neary will adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit.

At first, it's not uncommon to have an increase in saliva flow, perhaps some soreness and difficulty with chewing and speaking. This usually subsides quickly as your muscles and tissues adapt to your new dentures.

Dr. Neary and our staff will give you care instructions for your new dentures. Proper maintenance of your new denture(s), good oral hygiene, and proper diet will aid in the life of your new dentures. We encourage regular visits to our office , particularly for partial denture wearers, to help extend the life of your dentures as well.
